Libra: Meaning, Traits and History

Two of the brightest stars in Libra still carry Arabic names that mean the Southern Claw and the Northern Claw.

Claws. The scales of Libra are built from body parts that once belonged to the scorpion next door. For centuries Greek astronomers treated this stretch of sky as the front end of Scorpius, its pincers reaching west along the zodiac, and the star names Zubenelgenubi and Zubeneschamali preserve that older map like fossils in the rock. Libra is the only sign of the twelve whose symbol is an object rather than a person or an animal, and it got that symbol secondhand.

The Babylonians Weighed the Sky

The scales themselves are older than Greece, like nearly everything in the zodiac.

Babylonian star lists call this constellation zibanitu, the balance, and tie it to Shamash, the sun god who judged gods and mortals alike. The logic was seasonal and rather beautiful. When the zodiac was being formalised, the Sun entered these stars at the autumn equinox, the one day when day and night sit in perfect equilibrium, so the sky itself seemed to be weighing light against dark. Cardinal Air, Ruled by Venus

Libra initiates through people. That's the sign in one sentence.
