Capricorn: Meaning, Traits and History

Most constellation figures changed as they passed from culture to culture. Lions became dogs, maidens became goddesses, claws became scales. The sea-goat came through four thousand years untouched.

A goat's head and forelegs on the body of a fish appears on Babylonian boundary stones from over a thousand years before the Greeks, drawn almost exactly as star atlases would still draw it in the age of telescopes. The Babylonians called it SUHUR.MASH, the goat-fish, and made it the emblem of Ea, the deep-dwelling god of wisdom, craft and fresh water who rescued humanity in their flood story. The Gate of the Winter Sun

Capricorn begins at the winter solstice, the shortest day in the northern hemisphere, when the Sun stands at its lowest and starts the long climb back.

In ancient times the Sun sat among the sea-goat's stars at that turning point, which is why the line on the map where the solstice Sun stands overhead still carries the name Tropic of Capricorn, precession notwithstanding. Later astrologers called the sign one of the gates of the sky. The constellation itself is the faintest in the zodiac, a dim triangle of stars you need a dark night to trace, yet it has a modern claim to fame: in 1846 Neptune was discovered within a degree of where Urbain Le Verrier's calculations said it would be, right at the sea-goat's edge of the sky. Earth signs deal in the tangible. Cardinal signs initiate. Capricorn starts things that are built to outlive the builder, and that mission explains nearly everything about it.

Its ruler is Saturn, the slowest planet the ancients could see, the keeper of time, limits, structure and consequence. Hellenistic astrologers gave Saturn the outermost orbit and Capricorn inherited the long view that comes with it. Pessimism arrives dressed as realism. Status can matter more than it should, and feelings get filed under "later". The growth edge is letting the fish tail have its say: the deep water was always half of the animal.
